MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Minneapolis police are investigating after a child was reportedly shot in north Minneapolis on Friday morning.

According to MPD spokesperson John Elder, the 3-year-old boy was shot on the 2700 block of Thomas Avenue North at 11:03 a.m.

At the time he was alert and talking; he was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center by ambulance.

On Friday afternoon around 1 p.m., Elder said that he was in serious condition.

“The proliferation of guns and resultant ease of access is deadly, and we need every level of government to step up,” said Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. “Until state and federal lawmakers take meaningful action on gun control, local officials will continue working to protect our residents, bring justice to those harmed by senseless violence, and address the root causes of violence plaguing our communities.”

On July 9, a different 3-year-old boy was shot in the leg in north Minneapolis while he was playing outside. He is expected to survive.

The boy shot on Friday morning is now one of six children ages 10 and younger to have suffered from gunfire in the last two months. Trinity Ottoson-Smith, 9, was shot while playing on a trampoline. Six-year-old Aniya Allen was shot while eating a happy meal in the back seat of her mother’s car. Both of the girls died from their injuries.

Ten-year-old Ladavionne Garret was shot while riding in a car with his parents. In early July, a 9-month old baby was grazed by a bullet.
