Minnesota Weather: Severe Storms Move Into NW Minnesota Sunday Night

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) –  Severe weather is moving through parts of northwestern Minnesota Sunday evening.

According to Meteorologist Mike Augustyniak, tornadic supercell thunderstorms are likely to develop in western South Dakota around 4 to 6 p.m. The severe storms will move quickly east into the Red River Valley and possibly into west-central Minnesota starting around 7 p.m.

Here are the latest weather updates:

10:00 p.m.: Severe thunderstorm watch for Becker, Beltrami, Clay, Clearwater, Kittson, Lake of the Woods, Mahnomen, Marshall, Norman, Pennington, Polk, Red Lake and Wilkin County until 2 a.m.

9:00 p.m.: Severe thunderstorm warnings for Clay, Norman, Pennington, Polk and Red Lake County until 10:30 p.m. Marshall and Polk County have severe thunderstorm warnings in place until 10 p.m.

7:45 p.m.: Severe thunderstorms issued for Kittson County in northwestern Minnesota until 9:45 p.m, the tornado warnings ended at 7 p.m.

6:00 p.m. Severe thunderstorm warnings for Kittson and Marshall County until 7 p.m. And Clay, Mahnomen, Marshall, Norman and Polk County until 6:15 p.m.

4:30 p.m.: There are severe thunderstorm warnings issued for Beltrami, Lake of the Woods and Marshall County until 5:15 p.m.

3:13 p.m.: Parts of northwestern Minnesota are under a tornado watch until 10 p.m. And severe thunderstorm warnings for Marshall, Pennington and Red Lake County in Minnesota until 4:30 p.m.

The storms could bring tornadoes, destructive wind, flooding and hail. Augustyniak says the best chance for tornadoes will be before midnight in the marginal threat area.

The Twin Cities area looks to miss out on most or all of the activity.

On Monday, temperatures will reach in the mid-90’s, setting the stage for potentially more severe weather west of the metro area beginning during the evening, and continuing overnight.
