MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Lois Riess is back in Minnesota to face charges for her husband’s murder, after she was sentenced to life in prison last year for killing a woman in Florida.
Steele County Detention Center gained a new inmate Friday – the grandmother from Blooming Prairie who’s charged with first-degree premeditated murder in her husband David’s death.

He was found shot in their home in 2018, and investigators say Riess went on the run to Florida. While there, she killed a woman named Pamela Hutchinson. Prosecutors say it was because Hutchinson looked like Riess, and Riess was trying to steal her identity.
After a month-long manhunt, Riess was finally caught in South Padre Island, Texas on a bar’s surveillance camera. She pleaded guilty to murdering Hutchinson and was sentenced to life in prison.
Riess’s next door neighbor told WCCO she’ll now “get what she deserves.” But the man who recently moved into the Riess’s house said, “What’s the point in bringing her back? She’s just going to sit in a jail cell the rest of her life anyway.”
The neighbor also said he always remembered Lois and David Riess as being nice people.
Members of the Riess family who WCCO was able to contact chose not to comment.
