COP OUT

Jeri Jacquin, Movie Maven

Opening in theatres this Friday from director Kevin Smith, writing from the Cullens and Warner Bros. Pictures is the cop buddy comedy “Cop Out”.

This film tells the story of Jimmy Monroe (Bruce Willis) a veteran of the NYPD who wants to cash in his treasured baseball card to pay for his daughters wedding. Before that can happen the ’52 Pafko card is stolen.

His partner, Paul Hodges (Tracy Morgan) a cop who refers to himself as a ‘partner against crime’ has his own problems. He thinks his wife is having an affair, which is making it difficult for him to concentrate on anything.

To make matters worse, to get the card back they have to rescue a beautiful woman who holds the secret to off-shore bank accounts. It also makes it more difficult since she’s the only witness to a gangster murder.

If these two aren’t having enough fun they must rely on the thief Dave (Seann William Scott) to help them find the merciless memorabilia gangster whose got Jimmy’s baseball card before the wedding!

FINAL WORD: Willis has played all the roles he can possibly play! This particular role seems comfortable and fun for him. His one-liners, straight guy face and famous giggle are just endearing.

Morgan as Hodges is the insane character here. His wit plays off interestingly to Willis but, at times, can be too much. The chemistry between Morgan and Scott is like watching two five year olds go at it.

Scott plays his role with fun, which has come to be his cash cow. Anything he does people flock to see since his days as Stifler in the “American Pie” films.

Other cast include: Michelle Trachtenberg as Ava, Juan Carlos Hernandez as Raul, Sean Cullen as Captain Romans, Kevin Pollack as Hunsacker, Adam Brody as Barry Mangold, and Jason Lee.

This is Kevin Smith at his usual comedy and this is the first film directed that he didn’t write the script for. This isn’t brain surgery by a long shot but silly humor mixed in with some laughs. Seriously, look at the plot if you need back up on this.

TUBS OF POPCORN: I give “Cop Out” three tubs of popcorn out of five. It’s a fun comedy, which is quite the diversion from all intense films. Just expect to have a good time! This is definitely not for kids as this film has a lot of graphic violence and language.

In the end, there’s the right way to do police work – then there’s these two!
